A classic small town trap. Irene is a very small town, approximately 10 blocks long, sitting at the bottom of a valley on Highway 46. The posted speed limit on 46 is 65 mph. You must slow down to 25 mph for Irene after picking up speed coming down the hill into this valley (from either direction). The local Barney Fife targets out of state plates and has zero tolerance. I was written up for 30 in a 25; cost of ticket, $91.
Comment (9/2002): In state plates get the same treatment as out of state plates. Posted speed drops from 65 to 40 to 25 on eastern hilltop before entering Irene city limits. There is a trucks use lower gear sign before both hill crests. There is a reduced speed ahead sign before both hilltops. There are two 25 mph signs within a block of one another as you enter city limits from either side on 46. There are 3 25mph signs as you go through town eastbound and 4 25mph signs as you go westbound. The local "Barney Fife" tickets ALL speeders regardless of state plates or intelligence level (though it seems like many have problems when telling the officer they happened to miss 3 or 4 speed limit signs.) By the way, a ticket for 30 in a 25 zone is only $51, not $91. You need glasses and a calculator!

The Speed limit goes from 65 to 45 just before town limits, then entering town it drops to 25. When driving West, your going downhill and it is difficult to keep the speed at 25, you must apply braks often. The town Officer is often located at the church parking lot when drivers are entering west bound. The officer will pull you over at 3-4 mph over. Will see him about 80% of the time. However was fired for a short time in the summer of 03,but someone is back now.
