I live in Indiana and travel I-40 East/West between Memphis/Nashville frequently. The posted speed limit is 70 on this road. I was cruising along with my speed control set at 75, with many "local" (TN) cars whizzing past me. A TN State Trooper pulled me over, and informed me that I was speeding. I received a ticket for doing 74 in a 70 zone, during broad daylight, dry clear weather and very light traffic. When I questioned why I was given a ticket for allegedly doing 4 over the limit, when many cars were whizzing past me. The Trooper explained that they don't want "out-of-stater's to think they can just drive how they want in Tennessee." How many others' have been caught in this trap, as I am sure they know it is easier for to simply pay the $68.50 being from out of state rather that fight such a ridiculous ticket.
Comment (11/2002): You think tennessee is bad be from tennessee and just drive through Georgia, they ticket tennesseeians out of spite.
Comment (11/2002): The stretch of I-40 in the vicinity of the Brownsville exit is legendary for it's speed traps.
Comment (5/2002): Sorry you got trapped by on of our smokies - Most of them are pretty good and fair but I know that there are a few rotten ones. Like me, after traveling for 35 years, keep on believing that there are good ones.
Comment (6/2003): I think Mr. Indiana is telling a lie. I too live in Indiana and travel to Memphis very frequently. I have been stopped a few times by Tennesse Troopers and have never been issued a citation, even though I was speeding each time.
Comment (8/2003): I am a Tennessean who travels I-40 between Jackson and Memphis on a regular basis. I have seen countless Tennessee cars stopped and ticketed. Therefore to suggest that out of staters are being targeted is a bit extreme.
Comment (9/2003): The comment about georgia is buffalo chips. I live in TN and visit my brother in east GA at least once a year and have never been cited, but then of course I obey the speed laws. Why don't you try that and see if that helps. You are the kind of person that will thumb your nose at the traffic laws and then call other law breakers criminals.
Comment (1/2004): slow down and u won't have a problem
Comment (1/2004): If you DO decide to fight your ticket in Brownsville, and you're going under 10 miles over the speed limit, the judge will dismiss the ticket with costs. If you're going 15 over, you can take your chances. If you're going 20 over, don't waste your time - send in the money. Oh, and if you're pulled over by Trooper Johnson, don't say anything b/c he'll twist it around and he'll also lie to the judge. Believe me - I dealt with this THIS MORNING! (He said I tore up my ticket. That's funny - I had it right there with me - in one piece.) But, it was too late. Just don't speed through there and you won't have to deal with it.
Comment (2/2004): I guess that I must have really dumb luck, or something. I was traveling through there two weekends ago, doing 90 the entire way, and I NEVER saw one on the stretch from Memphis to Nashville. Of course, north of Nashville, heading into KY, I did see a few there, but they were all going the other way, or had someone already pulled over. If all else fails, get yourself a really good radar detector. Mine has pulled me out of more than a few close calls.
