Southwest Parkway, between William Cannon and Highway 71, especially the section between Travis Cook and Highway 71. This is a 4-line divided roadway in a relatively rural, lightly populated part of Southwest Austin/Travis County. It is regularly patrolled by Travis County units, particularly motorcycle units working in pairs. Southwest Parkway covers rolling terrain, with several long sweeping curves. The combination of the elevation changes and curves offer a number of hiding places for motorcycle patrol units, a pair regularly works the downhill section in the west-bound lanes past Travis Cook. The speed limit is 45mph, with signage that is insufficient and sometimes absent due to vandalism. The patrol units show no mercy - I was recently ticketed here while riding my motorcycle for 3mph over the limit.

Comment (1/2006): I can verify that the West bound section of Southwest Parkway at .5 mile mark before intersecting Highway 71 (which is around the sweeping curve mentioned earlier) is routinely set up as a trap every 4 to 6 months. Usually two motorcycle patrols work the trap, sometimes with a patrol car. As of late 2005 however new speed limit signs have been posted. 50 mph is posted as you begin entering the sweeping curve and within 150 feet 40 mph is now posted as the curve ascends to the crest before reaching Highway 71. Take note that as soon as you see the 50 mph sign you will have about 1 second to dramatically decrease your speed before coming in contact with RADAR or LIDAR. The patrolling officers can become quite agressive to the point of stepping out into the road to wave you down.

Comment (5/2006): As of March 2006, this trap is set up late at night (1 am), just as described.

Comment (5/2006): This is a horrible speed trap on Southwest Parkway and on barton Creek Blvd just off southwest parkway. This is all the time, not just occasionally. The hide as you are coming down a hill and around a corner and get you for even less tham 5mph over the posted limit. Give is a break...it's hilly.

Comment (5/2006): This area is definately frequently monitored by police.

Comment (6/2006): I agree, I come back from the grocery store late at night, and CONSTANTLY see people pulled over. Also a lot of road side alcohol test. If you've had a few, DO NOT take this road home from the bar.

Comment (6/2006): We don't stop at 5 over this is ridiculous we allow a minimum of 10 mph generally in all areas with the exception of school zones....if you're going to post at least tell the truth....sincerely Motor19 (TCSO Motor Division)

The stretch of RM 2244 (Bee Caves Rd.) west of Highway 360 (Capitol of Tx. Hwy) to Highway 71 is patrolled by Travis County and Texas DPS units. Posted speed limits range from 40mph to 60mph over the approximate 7.1 mile portion of RM 2244, a route with numerous elevation changes, curves and intersections of suburban West Austin and Travis County. Enforcement against motorcyclists, especially on weekends is ridiculously aggressive. The speed limit drops from 60mph to 40 mph east of Barton Creek Blvd., with inadequate signage. Travis County motorcycle units hide in the driveway entrances, using laser/lidar, usually working in pairs.
