This stretch of highway extending from just north of Canyon to the near downtown Amarillo is congested at nearly all times of the day. Although it is only 15 miles, it is not uncommon to see up to 5 troopers and police cars. The section where you're most likely to encounter a cop is from the Intersection of US 87 to Bell Avenue. If you notice a car going really slow in the fast lane, it's more than likely a trooper.
Comment (1/2003): I live here and it's true! Horrible wrecks happen on that straight away because so many college kids attend W.T. and commute back and forth to Amarillo. Just last night there was a car flipped on it's top on the access road that had come of the interstate. People hit the underpass concrete pillars too. Be very careful for crazy drivers on that strip. Now, just leaving Canyon on to Lubbock for about a 15 mile area, they will give you a ticket for 71 in a 70. I swear! I've seen them do it. I don't know why, I guess those cops are mad that they don't get to be where the action is between Amarillo and Canyon!
Comment (2/2003): Received a ticket for 3mph over the speed limit. The speed limit was 65mph at night and 70mph in the day (ticketed around 7pm). I am from out of town but took the case to court since I was in town that day. Trooper swore he "never took his eyes off my vehicle for one second" which he said he could tell was traveling at "excessive speed" - 68mph in a 65mph zone (calibrated eyeballs?) going the other direction while he went from a full stop on the South bound shoulder, pulled onto South bound highway, crossed 2 lanes of traffic, the median, then another 2 lanes of North bound traffic all while looking back over his shoulder at my vehicle? - highly unlikely. The Justice of the Piece and Prosecuter also seemed to be in on this game. Prosecutor came out to "just have a chat to help you out" asking questions that he used for his prosecutory position. Fortunately, I was clever enough to know what he was doing and he spent all his time making an arguement on the accuracy of the speed gun. The JP turned out to be a kangaroo court despite overwhelming evidence: Ticket written to a black sedan with a Texas license plate, while my rent care was a bright green sedan with a Louisiana license plate. The JP finally "recused" himself when this huge error was disclosed. This strategic move meant that this case would require an additional court date with a different JP. Of course I was from out of town and a new court date would require the expense of an out of town trip, how convenient. After I notified the JP that I would be paying the fine, he raised the publised $70 fine to $100 "just to make it easier for you" according to the JP. Be fairly warned, the local DPS officer, Prosecutor and JP seem to be running a factory in that area. I don't hold their tactics against them. Actually, the way they work together to achieve their "goal" is admittedly clever, albeit unethical and not what I would want from my elected official from Amarillo. You may want to think about thi
Comment (2/2004): It's true, I saw numerous police agencies, ranging from texas troopers to randall county deputies patrolling this area in depth. It looked like a disco heading south on i-27 towards lubbock. These people do not play around.

LOTS of motorcycle cops on I-40 in Amarillo observed over Thanksgiving holidays. Counted as many as 5 stacked together and they are actually hiding behind bushes. I guess the city of Amarillo is facing a budget crunch.

Comment (2/2004): It's true, I saw numerous police agencies, ranging from texas troopers to randall county deputies patrolling this area in depth. It looked like a disco heading south on i-27 towards lubbock. These people do not play around.

Comment (2/2004): It's true, I saw numerous police agencies, ranging from texas troopers to randall county deputies patrolling this area in depth. It looked like a disco heading south on i-27 towards lubbock. These people do not play around.

Comment (2/2004): It's true, I saw numerous police agencies, ranging from texas troopers to randall county deputies patrolling this area in depth. It looked like a disco heading south on i-27 towards lubbock. These people do not play around.
