Two Virginia troopers hide behind bushes in the median crossover at approximately this mile marker. It is located at the bottom of substantial downgrades in both directions of I-64. It's hard to maintain cruise control along this stretch because it's hilly. There is also very little traffic so it's easy to think you can coast down the hill, figuring you will slow down on the ensuing upgrade. Don't do it. Brake on the downgrade so you do not exceed 75 MPH. Otherwise you are a sitting duck for this trap at the bottom of the downgrade.
Comment (10/2004): The correct spelling is Alleghany.
Comment (10/2004): Alleghany County, Virginia, especially the Interstate 64 area between West Virginia and Lexington, Va. is one of the worst speed traps in the US. Radar is illegal in Virginia, and if you are using one, you will get pulled over and ticketed. The Va State partol is constantly out there in both marked and unmarked cruisers, and will hit you moving in the opposite direction and cross the median after you. I lived in the area over 20 years and never understood why that neck of the woods had so many highway patrol. no matter, watch out in this area
Comment (6/2005): There is also a speedtrap in the community of Iron Gate on Rte. 220, near Botetourt County. Saw someone pulled over by an unmarked police officer just a few hours ago!
Comment (2/2006): I was going down the hill, at this location, trying to cool off my overheating engine that was hot from climbing the upgrade on the other side of the hill, so it wouldn't blow up climbing the next upgrade and got nailed. The courthouse is in a little town called Covington. I was amazed at the number of police and trooper cars in this small jurisdiction. You couldn't go 2 blocks without passing one. Apparently traffic fines support the entire town which appears to mainly consist of law enforcement, court, and legal personnel. They love to stop out-of-town people traveling 80 mph or higher because they can charge you with misdemeanor reckless driving and you must appear in court which usually means a motel stay and purchasing meals at the restaurants, who also profit from this money-making setup.
Comment (2/2006): Alleghany County Sheriff's Deputies also patrol this portion of highway.
Comment (3/2006): The reason you see so many police cars in Covington, Va is Court, they have to be there. Fines do not support the town of Covington, Westvaco (Paper Mill) does.
