This trap is located between Exit 62 and the Virginia Welcome Center (as you are coming South on I-77 from West Virginia) and just before Exit 62 (as you are coming North towards West Virginia). The VSP Troopers tend to be the ones who use this trap and generally use it late at night, however they do sit there during the day on occasion. The speed limit through this area is 65, but you can generally get away with somewhere between 70 - 73 in the area before getting stopped.
Comment (06/2007): They also have a newer Dodge Charger that is not marked. This is what hit me as I came out of the tunnel.

As you are coming South from West Virginia and into Virginia on I-77, Virginia State Troopers like to sit just south of the East River Mountain Tunnel. The speed limit coming through the tunnel is 55 and does not change until after you pass the on-ramp at exit 66 and are coming down hill. The troopers and the occasional deputy like to sit in the median just past the on-ramp at Exit 66 and write people for speeding coming down the hill out of the 55 zone. Also remember radar detectors are illegal to have plugged up or even anywhere near where you can use them in Virginia and this carries a pretty steep fine itself. They write radar detector tickets a lot to travelers right in this area too.

Troopers and the occasional Bland County (useless) Deputy like to pull off to the right hand side of I-77 North as you are coming down the grade between the top of Brushy Mountain (there is an overpass across the interstate for Kimberlin Rd at the top of Brushy Mtn.). They pull off to the right shoulder in the grass between the 56 mile marker and Exit 58 (Bastian Exit). They run radar on you as you are coming down the grade of the mountain. The speed limit in the area is 65

As you are traveling North on I-77 just after entering Bland County and come through the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel LOOK OUT! Just outside the north side of the tunnel you will come through a slight curve and in most cases encounter a vehicle parked in the yellow "sticks" in the median between the north bound and south bound lanes of travel. There is generally a deputy in an unmarked Maroon Dodge Intrepid or a deputy in a Brown marked (slick top-no light bar on top) Crown Vic. VSP Troopers also use this "hole" alot. Most VSP units in the area are marked Blue and Gray Crown Vics or Chevy Impala's with blue light bars and plenty of antenna's to give them away. There area also three unmarked VSP units in the county. One is a Gold Dodge Intrepid, another is a Gray Chevy Impala, and the third is a White Crown Vic with dark tinted windows (K-9 Unit). There is also one trooper who has a marked Blue and Gray Chevy Impala, but her vehicle is a slick top (no light bar on top). I know this and the three other spots I have posted (East River Mtn Tunnel area, Exit 62 area and 57 mile marker area) because I live in the county and see them all the time. If you make it through Bland County without seeing somebody pulled over, then you're having a real good day.
