This is an irritating operation that has been around for years. At this location, Glebe Road is a four lane divided highway. The northbound lanes are straight for at least a half mile and go down hill on a gentle slope. The trap is set just around the curve where Glebe Road turns to the right and is still a divided highway. A sign just before the curve indicates a 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT. (Well beyond the curve, Glebe Road does squeeze to two lanes as it winds down the hill to Chain Bridge.) (This observer uses this road principally on weekends.) The trap was last observed around 5 PM on Saturday 2/23/02, in broad daylight, during good weather and relatively low traffic conditions.

Comment (8/2002): In 1998, a senior Arlington SOD officer told me that one had been shut down. Too bad they're back at it again. There are a lot of speed-related accidents there in the wee hours of the morning but that's not when they are writing tickets. The commuters know to watch it, so they are grabbing the occcasional passers-through who are lulled by the boulevard appearance of this stretch.

Comment (1/2003): As you come down Glebe towards the bridge look for any sort of movement in front of the trees just as the road splits. This summer I saw ACPD officers standing there using what I assume are laser guns on at least a couple of occasions. Don't remember that I saw a cruiser (may have been parked on the on-coming traffic side, while I was heading down towards the bridge) but definitely noticed the officer as I passed him.

Comment (5/2003): Saw one there with a car pulled over this past weekend.

Comment (11/2003): I have seen them here too. Sometimes they sit on the northbound side of the road, just before the trees, and gun people coming up from chain bridge and flag them down as they pass the trees in the middle of the divide. Additionally, I have seen a few motorcycle mounties about a mile south of this area, trying to catch those expecting the trap at military.

This is not really a speed trap so much as it is a trap in general. Cops park their cruisers on both sides of the exit right as you get to the stoplight and they stand out of their cars and just flag down anybody they want to pull over for any type of violation (license plate, sticker, tint, etc) Best bet if you have any violations is to avoid that exit.

Northbound George Mason Drive, 1/4 mile north of intersection with Rt. 7. Coming down the hill, speed limit is 35. Very easy to do more than this due to steep hill and speed limit too low for prevailing conditions. Officers hide patrol car in parallel-parked traffic on right at end of hill and step out into traffic to perform stops. This happens frequently (4-5 times a month).

I submitted one for this location a few minutes ago, but forgot to include that the speed limit is 30 thru here, even though it is 2 lanes each direction. Should be much higher, majority of cars do 45 or higher!!

Cop sits with parked cars, speed limit is 35 but it should be much higher. Cops sit about a block prior to it turning to 45, you can even see the big 45 MPH sign ahead but he writes for 35.

Caught me at dusk. His car was parked on the 395 side of the road under some trees. Heading southbound toward from Pentagon City to Glebe Road. He was out of his car, waving people over. Because of lack of visibility, I almost hit him and almost did not stop because it was difficult to tell he was a cop.

Police will ride the shoulders, on their motocycles, to park at the end of the on-ramp. They randomly pull drivers over for no apparent reason.

The cops park at the entrance of the shirlington movie theater parking lot and radar down Arlington Mill Drive. They are catching speeders coming from S. Walter Reed Drive and driving toward 395. The speed limit is 30mph and you can easily exceed. Beware in the morning. I have never seen them ticket any other time of day.

Lee Highway is four lanes at this point as it goes down a big hill on either direction. Speed traps are often set up with two officers going west bound as you start up the hill. They walk into traffic and flag you over. Going east bound they also set up, usually the same officer. He stands behind a telphone pole and catches east bound traffic as they start up the hill, and flags them over. End of the month, and summer is very bad. WATCH OUT!
