The traps are typically set up going either south headed toward Richmond or north toward Fredericksburg. The speed limit drops from 55 to 45 to 35 in a VERY short distance and the troopers or the town cops do not give you ANY room for error. We were headed back to Richmond on Christmas Day and we were dropping our speed from the 45 to 35 zone, and the trooper clocked us at 43 in a 35. As soon as you see the signs dropping the speed limits ahead, make sure that you hit the posted speed as soon as you get to the sign posting it.

Comment (6/2003): This is right: where there's 35mph limit on Rt. 1 in Ashland, do 34 mph just in case. You'll feel silly crawling along on a 4-lane road, but you won't get ticketed. Watch Sunday evenings! If you get ticketed, you'll be convicted, and if convicted you'll get a big fine and 4 points on your license. That's how VA works--unlike in some states, the judge is given no discretion to assign a fine with no points.

Local residents are well aware of this - the speed limits in Ashland are strictly enforced anywhere in the city limits. You might be able to get away with 5-7 mph over posted 35 or 45, but do 10 or more on surface streets and you're dead meat.

Ashland Police have acquired a Spectre III radar detector-detector (RDD) to sniff out those who use rd's. My suggestion, get a Bel STI, they are immune to the VG-2 and the Spectre's.
