There everywhere, there everywhere!

Comment (10/2002): I don't believe they use air patrol in this area.

Comment (1/2003): This is no joke. Don't speed on 29 N or S when in Madison, Amherst or Green counties. It's not uncommon to see four to five state highway patrol cars when traveling along this 50 mile stretch of road. This equates to about one officer per 10 miles of road equaling an overhead cost that could only be supported by a massive push to write tickets -- especially those vehicles with out of town plates. The only two tickets I've ever received were on this road three years apart. Both incidents I was traveling 65 in a 55 and it was the same officer both times. I told her that she had written my first traffic ticket and now she was writing my second. She informed me that she writes about 25 a day so there was little chance she remembered...

Comment (4/2003): I have lived in Amherst County for the last thirty years. I can't argue. All I can add is, be polite. Keep both hands where the officer can see them, don't make any sudden moves, and don't give the officer any crap. They won't give you a wreckless driving ticket if you don't show your butt.I reciently got one for 70 in a 55 in Nelson county, by a realy nice State Trooper. I admitted to doing 65, but I hadn't realized I was doing 70.He suggested that I have my speedo calabrated and gave me the address of a garage in Charlottsville. It cost me $70+ to talk with him, but he let me slide on the W.D., and only charged me with 14 mph over the limit.Buckle up, keep up with traffic and you'll be OK.H.B. Amherst

Comment (6/2003): keep up with traffic or I was going with the flow, oldest saying in the book...it doesnt work people. Slow down and do a reasonalble speed. Speed limit is for a reason, not a money making scandal. In state out of State, you think the police can see your tags from the distance he/she gets your speed coming through radar..NO come on no more excuses.

Comment (6/2003): Greene County writes 3000 tickets per year. 98% to non-county residents. No slack.

Comment (8/2004): There is no Laser, Vascar, airplane, or photo use in Amherst County. Just good'ole radar. Don't fly on U.S. 29 and you won't get a ticket it is as simple as that. However if you choose to speed there are enough Deputies in the county to make you think they are as the other writer said, "everywhere!" Speed at your own peril.

Comment (8/2004): Coming north on 29 out of Lynchburg, the speed limit drops from 55 to 35 when you cross 29 business. No warning about the drop, and the cops like to pick you off right when it changes. I got hit for $150 there. Also heavy enforcement on 29 South right around the town of Amherst where there is a long term construction site. I drive 29 between Lynchburg and D.C. several times a year and I always see several speed traps. There's just no way to avoid them.

Heavy enforcement along Routse 29 corrider, many new, "gung ho" cops will ticket for petty violations (failure to signal lane change, defective equipment, 3mph 0ver limit. etc.). Be especially cautious at night as they sit in cross-overs and turn-offs with NO LIGHTS ON between Sweet Briar College and Monroe, inviting an accident. The local paper has been featuring two pages of traffic court news lately - a new source of revenue to the county!
