This is the last intersection in Blaine before 543 reaches the Canadian border. The posted speed limit is 40 mph... this is a long, straight road populated moderately by truck traffic. You'd better not be doing 43, or else! Look out for the occasional Washington State Patrol cruiser parked on D Street, east of 543, looking for their next victim. Especially beware if you have out-of-state plates. Just when you think you are home free...

Comment (11/2004): I live in Blaine, Wa. The local police use moving radar and usually will not stop you unless your doing at least 7 mph over the posted speed limit. Also you'll never see the state patrol in town unless they're called.

Comment (2/2005): WSP must get called a lot, then, because I always see at least one cruiser when passing through Blaine.

Comment (08/2007): I recently got a speeding ticket on \"H\" Street, just east of the intersection of SR 543 and \"H\" Street. \"H\" Street is just south of \"D\" Street. This is a speed trap. Unsuspecting tourists heading north along SR 543 to the border can turn right (EAST) onto \"H\" Street Road to the next border crossing at Lynden, WA, which is usually less crowded than at the truck crossing. However, once you turn onto \"H\" Street, the speed limit is 25 mph. An unsuspecting tourist may be slightly bewildered by the experience and miss this speed limit sign which is close to the intersection and just beyond (a matter of feet), there will be a police cruiser sitting, waiting to nab you. That\'s a $164 USD ticket. Ouch! And a rather unfair speed trap for tourists who, while trying to be careful about respecting laws, may easily miss that sign. Further on there is also a sign but it is partially obscured by tree branches. I missed the first sign. These Washington police officers will not listen to you or answer any questions. Like robots in a facist police state, they hand you a ticket and that\'s it.
