The sign says reduce speed 25.And thats the speed limit! Even though up ahead (500 feet)there is another sign that says speed limit 25. so in reality according to the sheriff that pulled me over claims that the reduce speed sign IS the speed limit.

At the south end of Colfax, WA, where James St turns into State Highway 195. The speed limit is 25 through town, and changes to 45 at the edge of town. But if you speed up to 45 before reaching the sign, the cops will pull you over. Cops like to sit in private driveways in this area, and prey on unsuspecting drivers. Locals know where they hide, but visitors are caught off guard. The City says that it is still a residential zone, but I think they depend on the revenue from all the tickets. In my opinion, 35 would be more than a safe speed. Colfax, a town of 2500 residents, is also thte County Seat. So it is headquarters for city, county and state police, and all three entities benifit from the revenue from the speeding tickets written.

Colfax, WA has a long-standing reputation for varying speed limits and police waiting. It has a to be a prime income source. Once they even gave a speeding ticket to an ambulance on a legitimate run...and the driver was unable to get out of the ticket. It's the most notorious area in SE Washington. Abrupt speed changes and unrealistic speed limits are on all entries into town and at expected places. It's hard to get through town without slipping over the limit. Both State Patrol and Town Police are equally strict.

Speed through town is 25 MPH. I got pulled over for 27 MPH. Also just outside of town there is a 25 MPH sign and within feet, a 45 MPH sign.If you are not completely past the 45MPH sign you can be stopped in between the signs for speeding, even though the new speed is in sight.

Was going north towards Colfax, when passed cop going southbound. Cars were passing us, while we were going the speed limit. Cop went right by them and turned around behind us and pulled us over. He told us we were speeding, when cars were passing us. We got pulled over for going ten miles over the speed limit, and we were going the posted speed limit. The cars that passed us prior to the cop were speeding not us.
