WSP waits for someone to go up the bridge (you can't see over the other side) and he nails you going faster than the unrealistic 60 MPH limit. That road is straight for miles and they have zero tolerance for speeders.
Comment (4/2003): The speed limit on this section of road is actually 55 mph. I know, I got a ticket there.
Comment (8/2003): Watch your speedometer just in case, I was told that I was going 74 here, and I know I was only going maybe 65 tops. They don't even want you to have your day in court. If you mail in with the "explain the circumstances" box checked, they send you a letter that says what your fine would be, it's all based on your driving record. I had a clean record so the fine was a lot less, I mailed it in, saving the county money I guess. If you get a ticket here and your record is relatively clean, I recommend checking that box.
Comment (10/2003): Chances are if you are stopped at the Berentson bridge it is by the Swinomish Police Department (tribal), not WSP or County. They live and breath to catch speeders in this area going East and Westbound.
Comment (10/2003): 60MPH in this area is not unreasonable. I travel this road regularly and it is a busy two lane road with limited sight distance and exiting and slowing traffic. They lately have removed one crossing entrance near the cassino to cut down on accidents but it is still a bad area for traffic accidents. There are also several traffic signals less than a mile ahead which require traffic to slow down upon entering the more populated area.
Comment (12/2003): Yup, its pretty bad, i got a ticket there just the other day, the limit is actually 55, i was doing 65.
Comment (4/2004): I drive this stretch of road everyday and I've learned one thing: you can never predict when the State Patrols and reservation cop will be in the area. I've seen them just about every hour of the day. The best bet is to slow down as you crest the hill or bridge (depending on the direction you're headed) and return to a reasonable speed after you pass through the gully. You do, however, have to watch out going eastbound toward the Farmhouse Inn. Just the other day I noticed a state patrol sitting back on one of the gravel roads hidden behind the tall grass on the right side of the highway. You couldn't see him until you got right on him, but I'm sure he can see you coming off the bridge. Watch out!
Comment (5/2004): Hate this stretch of road. I got nailed by airplane. they said some guy in an airplane clocked me with a stopwatch. They wait for you to get over the bridge, and then there are three or four of them waiting for you.
Comment (7/2004): The truth of the matter is that the speed limit on this highway is 55 not 65, 74 or any thing else never got a ticket here put the vehicle on 59 and drive on it's not the I-5 it may look like it and you want it to be but your wrong. Get the state to change the speed limit in this area and you can drive as fast as you want up to the limit.
Comment (1/2005): I have driven that stretch of road during all times of day, and they are not there as often as people say. Nonetheless, they are sticklers about the speed limit. You can usually get away with any where around 55-60 and only between 55-60. Its the state patrol that sits there and not some reservation police. I agree that during peak traffic hours, 55 is not unreasonable, but if its 11:00 at night when there is no cars around, it feels REALLY slow. Its not so much of a limited sight distance as people say. This area is a prime example of having a variable speed limit. Peak times, put it at 50-55, after peak times, put it at 60-65.

The westbound stretch of SR 20 between mileposts 53 and 52, just before the bridge over the Twin Bridges Marina and the Swinomish Indian Reservation. This area is patrolled by WSP aircraft. They time you between the mileposts, then WSP cars wait on other side of bridge to pull you over. Good news is these tickets are easy to beat. Bad news is it takes up a lot of your time.

This trap is a new one that the Anacortes police have been using. Traveling north on D Ave. you will come to the crest of a hill that is quite large. Going down the hill it's easy to speed and usually at the bottom of this hill is an Anacortes officer sitting in the bushes waiting for you. Heading the other direction it is much easier to see the officer. Speed limit is 30 MPH.

Sometimes it's an Anacortes cop, sometimes it's a Washington State Patrol, sometimes it's a Skagit County officer. They all sit right at the stereotypical location of right under the "Welcome to Anacortes" sign and will nab you for anything over about 60 MPH. Speed limit is 55 MPH.

State Patrol waits on the north side on Hwy 20 (sometimes in the bushes) just beyond the bridge that goes over the slough. Summer weekends are the worst time to speed - nonstop ticketing is the norm. MY ADVICE IS DON'T SPEED! Obey the 55 MPH posted speed limit or you are asking for a ticket! Often times there are 2 or 3 State Patrol cars picking off the speeders and giving them a "Welcome to Anacortes" ticket. We own a business that overlooks the area referred to and we can watch the State Patrol busy at work making sure that we are safe!

Local police sit at the rest area pull out on the curve beyond where HWY 20 turns to go to Oak Harbor. As you are in the curve, the cop is sitting right there with radar gun in hand - by the time you see him, it is too late to slow down.
