Wyoming Highway Patrol regularly patrols this highway between Laramie and Centennial. The highway is very lightly travelled and radar detectors are of minimal use as you cannot depend on another vehicle getting zapped first. The speed limit is 65 mph yet the road is so lightly travelled and so free of obstructions or other engineering limitations that one will have great difficulty keeping the speed down. WHP is particularly agressive around the time that the local ski area is opening/closing. WHP will not take into account the low traffic conditions and will, at most, allow only three to four mph over the limit. There are many stories of people being pinched at two mph over the limit.
Comment (6/2005): Those are just that, stories. WHP starts writing tickets @ 6 mph over the limit on any highway.
Comment (4/2006): Ski season also equals icy roads on all Wyoming highways. Even if you are going the speed limit on icy roads, you are still traveling too fast for conditions. (especially on a two lane highway)Wyoming also has alot of deer and antelope, especially in that area, and they like to jump out in front of vehicles. It doesn't take alot of traffic to cause a crash.
Comment (4/2006): I want to know where you are getting this info on 6mph cuz I have seen people get hit for 3 and 4 over.
Comment (5/2006): My daughter received a warning (still goes on her record) for going 2 miles over the speed limit. The Casper STar Tribune just published an itemized listing of speeding tickets and there were several under 5 mph violations - just depends on how bored they are and what kind of a mood they are in.
Comment (6/2006): Warnings NEVER go on your record. Get your facts straight before posting!
Comment (6/2006): Listings in newspapers dont tell the whole story. The driver may have asked the court for a reduced sentence or fine. In which case the paper will publish what the citation was reduced to instead of what it was wrote for. Warnings do not go on your driving record however they are put into a computer at dispatch so a trooper can ask if there has been any other stops for the person or the vehicle.

The Highway Patrol canvass this 14 mile section of 287 just south of Laramie at all hours of the day. The highway is 65 mph, and many motorists fall into the trap of thinking that the HPs are only crusing I-80 so they will go 75 along this stretch. The HPs don't sit in one area waiting, and they love to get people from out-of-state.
