The local NC Highway Patrol is based in this town for North Western NC. Many of their new and younger officers are stationed in this area starting out, so they are looking to prove themselves. This trap runs Hwy. 19-E between Hwy. 19-23 in Mars Hill through the city of Spruce Pine and into Avery County. In the Burnsville area of 19-E (between Burnsville and Madison County line) the NC Highway Patrol is very predatory in their enforcement, especailly at night where they sit along the side of the road with no lights on or hidden where possible. They target older cars and young people in this area mostly.
Comment (06/2007): Yes, heed the warning about this area. Both the highway patrol and the local Burnsville police are VERY predatory along this stretch of highway, from 26 all along 19E through Spruce Pine. I live outside Yancey county and drove through there a few weeks back. Had a cop get behind me and followed me for must have been 10 miles...I imagine just waiting for me to go 2 miles over the speed limit or have a tire touch the center line. A local attorney told me, although it would never be admitted, you stand a great chance of being pulled over if you drive through Burnsville at 11:00pm or after - I had no idea it was against the law to drive at 11:pm or after! Who needs this predatory CRAP! I love NC and traveling in general...often visiting the off-the-beaten-path areas of the state, and spending money in local business. However, I will never travel this stretch of road again and would spend any additional money necessary to DRIVE AROUND the Burnsville area.
Comment (08/2007): There are also local \"Bubbas\", cop wanna-be\'s or some kind of junior deputy, who also troll around the country roads in this area. They\'re often in unmarked cars and will radio local police to finger cars. Apparently not much to do in this area except harrass and extort fines from drivers passing through. Believe me, there\'s nothing worth seeing here, so would receommend avoiding it.

Unmarked highway patrol monitors 19 off of I26 exit 9 all the way through to burnsville. Do not do anything over 55. Will give tickets for 1 mph over the speed limit. Car is a gray. Car is unmarked so he can be anywhere, just don't speed on this stretch of highway. He also looks for out of state tags.
