Stationary CHP officer sits at bottom of hill in valley nearest El Toro road exit on 73. Officer utilizes a Golden Eagle Ka band instant on, same direction, fastest vehicle radar unit. This unit is capable of obtaining your vehicle speed from over 2,500 feet and picks out the fastest moving car. The officer will take a reading from an extreme distance, watch for the quickest vehicle in the group and site that driver. It appears that speed up to 75mph don't usually grap attention. CHP also sit around blind turns on 73 with same strategy.
Comment (12/2003): Another way the CHP works on the 73 toll road:Right after you pay your toll going West-bound, people accelerate going fast -- but going downhill, around that first turn after the tool booth it can be impossible to see the CHP car/moto sitting righ in the middle of the curve! I've seen people get pulled over right after paying the toll! OUCH!
Comment (11/2003): also got caught the same way on the bottom of a hill between La Paz & Greenfield exits
Comment (12/2003): The gun may have a 2500 ft range, but the officer MUST be able to make a visual confirmation of your vehicle from 1/4 mile away before obtaining your speed with the gun.

Ka-Band Radar at the North Bound 73 (between Aliso Viejo and Newport Beach) toll plaza for fastrak users. Cruiser or Motorcycle sits about 250 yards from the FasTrak transponder structure and waits for a speeding or non-FasTrak user with paper or no license plates. I see the officer about 3 out of the 5 days a week I commute.

As you pass the S corners going downhill and enter the half mile long straight away, the Officers park in the entrance to a Gated Community right at the next bend. They can hit you straight on before you can even see them, by the time you do and think you have time to slow down, they are getting ready to pull you.
