In an 1/4 mile stretch you can often find 3 state troopers between Kilgore Memorial Drive and exit 135. The 6 lane interstate has a posted 60 mph speed limit. A lot of construction is 3 miles away towards Atlanta near Leeds. Coming from Atlanta directly underneath the bridge of exit 135, troopers will sit in the darkness without any lights within 100 yards of the speed decrease from 70mph, right next to the traffic lane on the blacktop shoulder facing you.

Comment (6/2004): If they really cared about accidents, they would slow those truckers down. This is only about revenue and PR.

Comment (1/2004): There have been several accidents resulting in death in this area over the past few years. The limit should be enforced here.

Comment (1/2005): Enforcement could be done with one car instead of three as there is such a shortage of troopers if the goal is to reduce accidents. However, due to the proximity of the signs to the cars and the numbe rof cars I agree it is far more about PR and revenue than safety.

Comment (2/2005): I know about speedtraps very well. Most of the true revenue generation is in the small towns. Larger areas have too many eyes watching them to do anything that some may question. B'Ham is no speedtrap and is not about the money. If you want to look at speed traps, look on I-65 north of B'Ham. Many of the cities are moving cops to the interstate where they really have no public safety concerns for their cities. After traveling the stretch between B'Ham and Cullman 3-4 times a week both ways for the last 1.5 years, there has been a significatly noticable increase in coverage as the state budget crisis grows. B'Ham is not one of the increases. If the crisis stays or grows more (likey so), then there MAY be move for B'Ham to think about the money. But, B'Ham has other ways of generating revenue (like increasing its city income tax up from 1.5% if you even work there, but not live there). If you need proof that B'Ham is not speed trap, they have required financial statements avalible to the public. View this year and the past and you will see that its not about the fines.

Comment (4/2005): still active drive through there on a regular basis

Comment (7/2005): This is a true statement. Recently Alabama added 21 State Troopers, and they have to make their salary like this.
