The Atlantic Beach Police Dept. has several officers that are mainly targeting tourists. One officer is stationed near the bridge under high voltage power lines, which cause faulty radar readings. So you don't even have to speed to get a ticket. They are hoping that by targeting out of town motorists, that the tickets will be to costly to dispute, and that you will just send a check to pay it off. Avoid this area from 11pm until 6am.
Comment (8/2002): Atlantic Beach Police does a wonderful job. Many tourists leave their brians on the other side of the Atlantic Beach Bridge when they visit. Many feel no laws apply to them. When they're stopped, their parting shot is usually "thanks for ruining my vacation"! People need to realize that excessive speed is the leading cause of traffic deaths in america. Just quit complaining and keep the foot off that gas pedal some.
Comment (1/2003): In regards to reason an officer is stationed near the bridge late is night has more to do with the several night dance clubs located there and the numerous intoxicated people, mostly tourists in the summer celebrating, leaving those establishments late at night. You may see parked officers on that stretch of roadway during the day but that is usually the two days before a 3 day weekend and the two days after. Their presence there allow many tourists and townspeople to survive the drunk driving that is prevalent. Also especially in the summer months there are alot of underage drinking going on and that helps keep that off the highway in that area.
Comment (6/2003): I saw a bumper sticker that read "Slow down, your not on the mainland anymore".
