Very rarely will you see troopers or police pull people over on this road. The whole way between havelock and morehead city is 55 mph, and i usually drive about 65. there have been numerous times where i've had troopers pass me, not going after anyone, just driving along. very laid back along this road.
Comment (9/2002): Maintain a safe speed and drive safely and you'll find that most officers are laid back. But don't get arrogant or disrespect an officer by passing him if he/she is doing the speed limit, this will get you stopped quickly.
Comment (9/2003): And another thing that irks me is to see a cop speeding for no apparent reason, or just cruising along at 10-20 above the limit just because he 'can'. I do not respect officers who do so because a police officer has no more right to speed than I do just because he can. I WILL copy down the tag number and car number of any police vehicle apparently "cruising" at a high rate of speed and report it to his supervisor. After all, it is obvious that an officer that is out of his state, county, or city is NOT enforcing the law.
Comment (5/2004): I have tried to report cops that are speeding in raleigh, and the jerk wouldn't take the report without my name and address

This one is often set between 2am and 4am particularly on the weekends. Safe speed is around 65-70, limit is 55. Highway Patrol likes to sit with lights off in the median coming out of the west end of the old US 70 loop that goes through Newport. Primarily looking for DUI offenders but have no hesitation to pull anyone doing more than 5-10MPH over. They appear to be looking for any reasonable cause to pull you, but will usually let you go if you aren't too far over the limit and don't appear to have been drinking. My advise is to set cruse control an 59 until you get well past the intersection.
